Dear Parents:
Enclosed you will find a list of recommended reading for the summer months. Please use the Reading Journal pages to keep track of the books that you have read.
We hope that your child can read at least 20 books during the summer vacation. You and your child are asked to choose fifteen books from the enclosed list and five books of their own choice. Encourage your child to read on his/her own, but it's OK to help them out by reading to them as well!!
Children of all ages enjoy being read to and reading to children at an early age encourages them to want to read on their own
In addition to keeping the Reading Journal, students will do projects such as Fan-Fold Display, My Book Box, Story Ball, and Story Map, on at least three of the books which they have read from the Second Grade Summer Reading List. They will bring their summer reading journals and projects to Second Grade when they return to school in the fall. Children will also asked to share their summer reading with their classmates.
Working together we can help each one of our children become good readers!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Sutton

Summer fun!
I have enclosed the handwriting worksheets that we were unable to complete in class. I would encourage you to follow the daily format that the worksheets suggest. Each day should take no more than 15 minutes to complete. This will ensure that your child’s penmanship doesn’t go out the window during the summer months.
I would like to encourage you get or let your child make a writing journal to keep track of their summer activities. This will keep their minds working like the authors they have become this year. Some families have even provided a special writers workshop corner or desk where the child has every thing he or she needs to be creative. (Pencils, crayons, construction paper, blank paper, lined paper, notebooks etc…)
Get your children in the kitchen to work on math. Cooking is a great way to keep their skills in good working order. Plus it is fun to eat the results. I am also sending their math books home. We only used some of the worksheets for each section. There are many more to choose from to keep their minds thinking like mathematicians.
I pray that each of you can truly enjoy the beautiful summer that God has created for us. I also pray that you will enjoy having your children back on a full-time basis. I know that many of you missed your children while they were here at school with me. Thank you for sharing them with me. I have enjoyed them and will miss them when they move on to second grade.
