January 5, 2009 Dear Parents,
A Blessed New Year! I hope you all had a great time and enjoyed Jesus’ birthday. I did, but now I’m ready to get back into our regular schedule! Hopefully all the children are, too! I’m going to keep them very busy!
A new snack list is by the door. For those who didn’t get a chance to pick a week I added you to the list. If that week doesn’t work for you please let me know! The list is by our classroom door, on the back of this letter, and on a tab on our web site under Kindergarten 1.
We move on to “Pp” this week. We’ll have fun with visits from the pastors and the principal to share their work with us! This fits well as we are beginning a class book about what they want to be when they grow up! This will be published in hard back form and available for purchase in a few weeks. See the last two year’s books on the table by our door. If you’d like to share your work with us please let me know so we can schedule a time! For show and tell let them choose one favorite Christmas present that they’d like to share. They may also bring something that begins with “p” for tomorrow. The book buddy bags are clean and ready to go again. We switched class boxes with Mrs. Casey so they’ll have all new choices!
We will really work with numerals 0 through 20 as we measure, add, and count many things and record our work. Many games we’ll play this month involve more and less and comparisons. Encourage writing numbers at home, too. While they do these hands on activities and record their work they are internalizing combinations, what one more or less is, one-to-one correspondence, and many other constants. I’ll be sending some activities home in their homework bags occasionally so watch for anything different.
Our themes this month are “Winter,” “Water,” and “Magnets.” Our art, science, and language experiences will be related to these themes. We’ll begin some fun water experiments. We’ll be making foil boats and seeing which design holds the most pennies before it sinks! This requires lots of math, too! Our Bible lessons this week are about Jesus as a boy at the temple. We’ll learn that God gives us parents, teachers and pastors who teach God’s Word and help us learn about Jesus, who loves us and forgives our sins. Our Bible verse is Ephesians 6:1 “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” Most parents love this verse! We’ll also spend some time with the few verses in the Bible that tell us about Jesus as a baby, including meeting Simeon in the temple at 8 days, the visit of the wisemen, and the trip to Egypt.
Everyone received a spiral notebook today that will be their diary or journal. We’ll use it to keep track of what is happening and to put our thoughts down, too. They’ll use pictures and words with words increasing as they are able. In Writer’s Workshop in January we really start emphasizing quantity of writing - at least a couple of stories a week. Some times quality suffers for a bit but that soon improves. At home now you can help with this tremendously. Just have your child write one thought down most nights. It could be a one line note to put in dad’s lunch or pocket, a note to a grandparent, a reminder for the fridge, or whatever! Have them stretch out the words themselves, listening for as many sounds as they can hear. Gently remind them to put space between words and end with punctuation. See if they are using lowercase letters consistently. Have high expectations! They can do this and it becomes much easier with just this few minutes of practice regularly. Thanks for your help on this. Book It begins for January. A form is in the folder. Please send December’s form back any time this week. A See Saw book order is in the folder, too. Please get your orders back by Friday.
May this special New Year be busy and Christ centered for you, Roxi Withee

January 5-9, 2009 Knowing Jesus, Growing in Faith, Serving God’s Children Dear Preschool parents, www.zioncrusaders.org Happy New Year to all! I hope that you had a fantastic Christmas celebration and are ready to get back into our normal routine.
A Peek at the Week: This week in Jesus Time we learn about Jesus growing as a child, found in Luke 2:40, 52. We learn that Jesus came to earth to show how much God loves us. He grew from a tiny baby into a man so He could accomplish the saving work God sent Him to do—die on the cross and rise again for the forgiveness of our sins. Our Bible verse is “The child [Jesus] grew and became strong,” from Luke 2:40. Tuesday-We will begin one of our new themes for the month, “Winter and Snow.” We will make a chubby little snowman to bring home and play a matching shapes game with mittens. We will also visit our school library to check out new books. Thursday-We will make snowmen wind socks to decorate the ceiling and work on some patterning with different colored mittens. If your child is in day: Wednesday-We will have Chapel in the morning led by Pastor Lockie. Our Chapel offering for January goes to Bethesda Lutheran Home. Book of the Week: Jan Brett’s The Mitten Song of the Week: “I’m a Little Snowflake” (to the tune of “I’m a Little Teapot”) I’m a little snowflake, cold and round. I fall from the sky and (whisper) I don’t make a sound. When it’s cold out, I’ll stay all day, but when it’s warm I melt away. Special Thanks: Humongous thanks to everyone for the gifts at Christmas, especially the Christmas “bonus.” If I didn’t get you a personal thank you note, thank you, thank you, thank you! From the Teacher’s Desk: *January book orders are in the folders & are due back next Tuesday. Make checks payable to Scholastic Book Clubs. *No school or daycare on Monday, January 19 for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. *Did you know that Friday is the end of the 2nd quarter? That means we’re half way through the school year! *I no longer have a land line, so if you need to get a hold of me, please feel free to call me either at the school or on my cell number anytime. Help Wanted: We are in need of a new Nativity set. Ours got a little extra “love” this year! If you have an old one at home you’d be willing to part with or find one at an unbelievable Christmas sale price, we’d sure appreciate it! Please make sure that your child is bringing appropriate warm outdoor gear to school. We do try to go out as long as the temperature and wind chill are not too low. I pray that you have a fantastic week, knowing that we are blessed far more than we really deserve! Please feel free to call me with any questions or concerns! NOTES FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE
MARCH, 2008
This month we celebrate Lutheran Schools Week. The schedule of events is listed on the back of this note.
For Lutheran School’s Week, on Thursday, March 8, we will again be combining Cookies for Christians and our Literature Fair together from 3-6PM. Parents have a great opportunity to stop in when picking up their children from school, to have their “cookie” and tour the classrooms which will all have displays for the Literature Fair. Parents in preschool through grade 2 who have ordered copies of their children’s class books from Student Treasures may pick them up from the classroom; children in grades 3-5 may pick up their free copy and any copies they have purchased of their books from Student Treasures that day also. We hope to see all of our parents on Thursday!
A FEW NOTES
· The Board of Christian Education will be looking at staffing for the 2008-2009 school year. Mrs. Casey will not be returning for the 2008-2009 school year…also the Board will be considering a teacher for the half day third grade and half day general educator position that was approved by the Voters in January.
· Thanks to all of our parents who make sure their children have proper shoes for PE on Mondays and Fridays. A few of our students have been choosing not to wear the proper shoes, so they will not be allowed to participate in the planned activity and thus reflect in the PE grade. This is being done for safety reasons and also to help instill responsibility, being prepared for class.
· Please remember to continue to save the various items for our school: Campbells Labels for Education, Prairie Market and Family Thrift receipts, Kemps and Land O Lakes proofs of purchase and used ink cartridges. The school uses the credits and checks from these items to purchase PE, recess, and classroom materials.
· New Horizons Band will be here at 9AM on Thursday, March 13 in the Multipurpose Room…parents, grandparents and friends are invited to attend this special concert.
