November 17, 2008 Dear Parents,
Are you ready for another busy week? Hopefully this will be a normal one, with no blizzards! Picture retakes are tomorrow. Bring back your package if you want retakes!
We’re working with “Kk” this week. At home have fun encouraging the use of all letters. Have your child write little notes to you, label things with post its, or try some fun ways to use magnetic letters. Remember to have your child think up a simple sentence, then have them write it down using what they know – beginning with a capital, stretching out new words and writing quickly those “fast words” they can read so well, and ending with some kind of punctuation. Or you can still write the sentence, but talk about those things, then cut the sentence up and have them put it back together.
Our Bible lessons are about the three men in the fiery furnace. We will learn that God protects us and gives us strength to live for Jesus. Our Bible verse is Psalm 121:8 “The Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” As we learn about the first Thanksgiving this week I find it so easy to integrate our faith into these lessons. God gave the Pilgrims strength for all the difficult times they faced, and they knew who to thank. We have some great picture books to help us imagine what it was like on the Mayflower and at Plymouth Plantation, plus several web sites. We just made Thanksgiving cards for soldiers. Our chapel offerings go to help the Meals on Wheels program in Rapid City. Please keep working on November’s Book It. I’ve been hearing about some of their favorite stories. As we read books together at school this month we are learning to ask questions as we read. This helps us understand what is happening. We find that many of our questions are answered as we continue the book, but that some aren’t. We learn that some answers can be inferred, based on what information we’ve been given. In the Three Bears, we infer that Goldilocks learned her lesson and probably wouldn’t go in a house again without being invited! When you read together don’t be afraid to think out loud and ask questions, too. Grandparent’s Day is next Wednesday, Nov. 26th. Grandparents or special friends (Moms and dads, too!) are invited to come at 8:15AM to go with us to chapel, and then stay for a short preschool, Kindergarten presentation. Then we’ll head back to our room and grandparents can come, too. It may be a bit crowded, but we’ll do some school activities together. School will be dismissed at 11:15AM. There will be no lunch or daycare. There is also no school next Thursday and Friday for Thanksgiving. Remember to mark Sunday afternoon, Dec. 7th, on your calendar, as that is our Preschool, Kindergarten Christmas service, at 4PM! All kindergarteners will have a costume, so don’t worry about a fancy outfit, just something comfortable. God’s blessings,
Roxi Withee

November 17-21, 2008 Knowing Jesus, Growing in Faith, Serving God’s Children Dear preschool parents, www.zioncrusaders.org Wow! What a crazy week we had last week with having to reschedule conferences and then my little girl had to be hospitalized on Friday for severe dehydration because of a stomach bug. Thanks to everyone for their prayers and well wishes. Heaven is doing much better. We have had so much stuff going around lately, so please make sure to keep your child home if they are sick.
This week in Jesus Time we learn about Elisha’s home, found in 2 Kings 4:8-10. We learn that God blesses us with homes. We learn that it’s not important what our homes look like or who lives there, but that the love of God pervade from our home. On Tuesday we will be watercolor painting a turkey. We will also being working on songs for our Christmas program, “The Stable Where Jesus Was Born,” which will be on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 4PM. We will be working on our Christmas program very hard this month and will take up most of our schoolwork time. We will also be visiting our library on Tuesday. On Thursday we will be finishing up a Thanksgiving card that we painted last week. We will also be learning some turkey songs as well as practice our Christmas ones. If your child is in daycare -on Wednesday we have Chapel in the morning at 8:30AM, led by Pastor Jones from Bethlehem Lutheran. Our Chapel offering for the month of November goes to help support the Meals on Wheels program, which is a big need in our community. We will also have a lockdown drill on Wednesday, in case your child says something. Picture retakes are Tuesday in the morning. If you would like your child to retake their school picture, please make sure to bring back the picture packet. You will be welcome to be in the room when they take your child’s picture so that you can see the results right away and make a final decision.
We will only have a half day of daycare on Wednesday, Nov. 26. If your child is in daycare, they are welcome to bring a grandparent or other special guest that morning to join us for Chapel at 8:30AM. The preschoolers and kindergarteners will then serenade their guests with some of our Christmas songs and turkey songs. Then we’ll have a little snack and your child is free to begin their Thanksgiving break (we usually finish up right around 10AM). We will have daycare until 11:15AM for those that need it. There will be no daycare or class on Thursday or Friday. Everything will resume on Monday, Dec. 1. Don’t forget to go see Zion’s float in the Parade of Lights parade on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 6PM.
Please feel free to call me anytime with questions or concerns! God’s blessings on your week! Zion 342-5749 Home 716-7689 Cell 391-9046 Hope Genzlinger

This week in Jesus Time we continue learning that God hears our prayers, from selected Scripture verses, such as Psalm 86:6 “Hear my prayer, O Lord.” We learn that God helps us pray for our needs and for one another and that He is always there ready to listen. On Monday we will be starting to do some “turkey talk”! We will finish up some handprint turkeys we painted last week. We will also being working on songs for our Christmas program, “The Stable Where Jesus Was Born,” which will be on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 4PM. Please help your child bring something that begins with Letter Hh to school on Wednesday, as we will be working on Letter Hh. We will also have a lockdown drill on Wednesday, in case your child says something. On Friday we will have center time that includes number recognition and matching lowercase and uppercase letters. We will also be working on some turkey songs to share with our grandparents and guests next Wednesday. Picture retakes are tomorrow in the morning. Memory
I’m the kind that likes to be a volunteer.
If God’s doing something big I want to be there.
Nothing’s more exciting or rewarding or inviting
Than to join the ranks and be one of His volunteers.
When I’m singing glory to the God above;
When I’m bringing glory to the God I love;
When God’s work is being done and heaven’s praises being sung,
Then I’m the one who wants to be His volunteer.

NOTES FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S OFFICE
MARCH, 2008
This month we celebrate Lutheran Schools Week. The schedule of events is listed on the back of this note.
For Lutheran School’s Week, on Thursday, March 8, we will again be combining Cookies for Christians and our Literature Fair together from 3-6PM. Parents have a great opportunity to stop in when picking up their children from school, to have their “cookie” and tour the classrooms which will all have displays for the Literature Fair. Parents in preschool through grade 2 who have ordered copies of their children’s class books from Student Treasures may pick them up from the classroom; children in grades 3-5 may pick up their free copy and any copies they have purchased of their books from Student Treasures that day also. We hope to see all of our parents on Thursday!
A FEW NOTES
· The Board of Christian Education will be looking at staffing for the 2008-2009 school year. Mrs. Casey will not be returning for the 2008-2009 school year…also the Board will be considering a teacher for the half day third grade and half day general educator position that was approved by the Voters in January.
· Thanks to all of our parents who make sure their children have proper shoes for PE on Mondays and Fridays. A few of our students have been choosing not to wear the proper shoes, so they will not be allowed to participate in the planned activity and thus reflect in the PE grade. This is being done for safety reasons and also to help instill responsibility, being prepared for class.
· Please remember to continue to save the various items for our school: Campbells Labels for Education, Prairie Market and Family Thrift receipts, Kemps and Land O Lakes proofs of purchase and used ink cartridges. The school uses the credits and checks from these items to purchase PE, recess, and classroom materials.
· New Horizons Band will be here at 9AM on Thursday, March 13 in the Multipurpose Room…parents, grandparents and friends are invited to attend this special concert.
