Summer Helps For Kindergarten and First Graders (and Their Parents!)

Tips for Parents Taken From: LD Online

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.
Parents should remember that children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your children this summer:

*Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.

*Take your children to the library regularly. Get signed up for Rapid City Public Library’s Summer Program. Let your child have their own library card.

*Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say.

*Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.

*Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook/journal. Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together. A simple spiral notebook can become a precious keepsake if they write in it most days this summer. Encourage and remind of punctuation and simple conventions of print.

May 16th, 2011

Dear Parents,
Our last week and a half of Kindergarten are here! I hope you all enjoyed the track meet as much as I did. Thank you to all the parents who helped with events it made the day run a lot smoother. The students did an excellent job using their running, jumping, and throwing talents God has given them.
This Friday is our second annual End-of-the-Year Spring school dance. We’ll have a DJ and a Hawaiian theme, with lots of fun group dances to learn as a family! It is from 7PM-9PM so come shake a leg with me!
We’re still working on making a calendar that will have something fun to do each day of the summer. Hopefully this will remind you to have them sit down for 15 to 30 minutes a day and use their school skills. Find everyday tasks that require reading and writing – making a list, a postcard to grandma, adding up the change in your pocket, etc. They’re bringing home their spiral notebook journal. We didn’t use many of the pages so have them continue to write in it most days. Make it a routine! That way they won’t lose any of their skills. It can make all the difference in how the first weeks of next year go.
Our Bible lessons this week are about Timothy! We’ll learn how Timothy was faithful in the Lord. There were three major things that were important to his spiritual development: being taught the Holy Scriptures, the influence of his mother and grandmother demonstrating their faith from day-to-day, and learning from teachers like Paul of the grace and salvation we have in Jesus Christ.
This week we have a lot of things I would like returned.  I will still read with the children but please send back any homework bag books you have. I would also like the math binders brought back this week on Tuesday. There are still library books that need to be returned. I put a note in your child’s folder of the books they still need to return. Last, but not least, all book buddies need to be brought back by Friday.
Next Wednesday, May 26th, is our graduation at 8:30, with chapel first and our graduation right afterwards. We hope you can come. The children will receive their diplomas and their school Bibles will be presented. Refreshments will follow. After this I will take the group back to the room, but if anyone doesn’t want to come back at 11:15 when we end they are free to take them after graduation.
Vacation Bible School begins Monday, June 6th and runs that entire week. Plan on bringing friends, too! It begins at 9AM and goes to noon.
Report cards will go home the last day of school. Send backpacks every day to put all their things in. I’ll try to send some things home every day to make it easier to carry! I hope to get you any pictures I have of each of the children before the end of the year! I didn’t take too many this year, but have some.

God’s blessings on your week!
