Summer Helps For Kindergarten and First Graders (and Their Parents!)

Tips for Parents Taken From: LD Online

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.
Parents should remember that children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your children this summer:

*Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.

*Take your children to the library regularly. Get signed up for Rapid City Public Library’s Summer Program. Let your child have their own library card.

*Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say.

*Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.

*Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook/journal. Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together. A simple spiral notebook can become a precious keepsake if they write in it most days this summer. Encourage and remind of punctuation and simple conventions of print.

Monday Note 5/2/11

May 2rd, 2011

Dear Parents,
It’s hard to believe that we only have three and a half weeks before our Kindergarten year is over!! We will keep busy using all those things we’ve learned this year. This week is very busy with our field trip to Reptile Gardens today and Circus dress rehearsal Thursday with the final performance on Friday.

Thursday we will present a dress rehearsal of our circus at 8:45 AM, for our school friends and anyone who can’t come on Friday. We decided to do it in the morning, as that is when they are fresh and cooperative! There is a note in the folder about the clothes your child needs to wear for their costume. On Friday we will start at 2:30 PM. It’s short, so be on time! Everyone is getting excited! This is a great photo opportunity. I’ll get some, including one individual of each child. We will be presenting the circus to the Westhills Village assisted living facility on Tuesday, May 10th, at 1PM. We’ll leave 15 minutes early. There is a sign-up sheet on the wall as we need drivers for this. It’s close and won’t take long. Sorry it’s in the middle of the afternoon, but that time worked for them.

We learn about how Paul spent the rest of his life sharing Jesus with others. We’ll learn about his missionary trips and that we have missionaries today all over the world. They’ll learn that they, too, are missionaries!  Our Bible verse is Mark 16:15 “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.” The remainder of the year will be spent reviewing the Bible Verses to make sure we have them hidden real well in our hearts. They are looking forward to taking their Bibles home this summer! Thursday is the National Day of Prayer so we will begin outside by our flagpole with the rest of the school to pray together.

Before the last day I’ll send home a calendar for the summer. It’ll give things to do that review what we’ve learned. It is very helpful to keep your child reading, writing, and using these new skills. Otherwise those first weeks next fall are overwhelming. More on this later!

This is the last week to check out library books and book buddies. I hope you enjoyed the book buddies. Please start looking for those overdue books and book buddies.  If they return their library books by the 12th they will receive a treat from the library ladies!

The Track Meet at the School of Mines is next Friday, May 13th. Everyone will come directly to the track that day by 8:45AM. The boys run their races first this year and the girls will have their field event in the morning, then they switch, usually around 11:30 to noon. Each will be in two running events and one field event that Mrs. Winjue puts them in according to gym practice. The fastest children will run together in the first heats of an event and the slower ones in a later heat.  That way they run with children of like ability. We have many more kindergarten children than the other schools, so most heats will have several of our children in them! It is a fun day, but can be a bit long for the little ones. Be sure they have water, layers of clothes, a lunch, and sunscreen and a hat. I will appreciate any help keeping track of everyone and getting them to their events on time. I usually take all the runners down to their races and have parents take groups to the field events. If any of you would be willing to volunteer there is a sheet on the wall to sign up. I’ll let you know what events your child is in as soon as Mrs. Winjue gets them ready to help decide if your child is in the event to help with that one!

We are reviewing all short vowel sounds this week in Phonics. The children are really doing well listening for the sound differences, as some can be very tricky! Bring those Math Binders back this week for one last new game to play. These have been so beneficial this year, it really shows!

Friday, May 20th we are having our annual End-of-the-Year school dance from 7-9pm. This is a fun family event. Children need to have an adult accompany them. We’ll be learning group dances and having lots of fun together!

Happy Mother’s Day on Sunday! Watch for a special gift and card coming home at the end of the week!

God’s blessings on your week!
