Summer Helps For Kindergarten and First Graders (and Their Parents!)

Tips for Parents Taken From: LD Online

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.
Parents should remember that children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your children this summer:

*Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.

*Take your children to the library regularly. Get signed up for Rapid City Public Library’s Summer Program. Let your child have their own library card.

*Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say.

*Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.

*Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook/journal. Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together. A simple spiral notebook can become a precious keepsake if they write in it most days this summer. Encourage and remind of punctuation and simple conventions of print.

April 26, 2011 Knowing Jesus, Growing in Faith, Serving God’s Children
Dear Parents,

Happy Easter! He is risen! I pray you all had a wonderful time celebrating His resurrection. I hope everyone had a chance to share their eggs and the story for each one! They had so much fun making them.
These last weeks of school are always so busy! With spring here, we’ll practice a disaster drill Wednesday morning, along with the citywide practice. Our class goes to our bathroom – we really do all fit!
*This week the National Lutheran Accreditation Team will be here, as we are finishing that process now. It includes state accreditation, too. We’ll eat lunch with them on Tuesday!
*Next Monday, May 2nd, is our trip to Reptile Gardens at 1:00PM. This is our only trip with a cost -$5 for students and $8 for adults. If you’d like the season passes they are $7 for students and $11 for adults. If you could send that in this week, before our trip, that would be helpful for me to have it all ready to go. If you already have season tickets just send that in and I’ll return it that afternoon. Thank you to all those who signed up to drive. You’ll only have two students per car. We go on a hunt for specific things, and it is very helpful to have only two or three!
* Friday, May 6th – Our circus play will be performed at 2:30PM in the multipurpose room. Bring your cameras or camcorders! It’s very short, but so cute! We’re working on the acting parts now that they know the music so well, especially adding little details! We have most of the costumes. If tight rope walkers have a pink leotard or dance outfit with tights, that would be perfect. I have a few leotards if you don’t. The other costumes are taken care of.
We will be presenting the circus to the Westhills Village assisted living facility on Tuesday, May 10th, at 1PM. We’ll leave 15 minutes early. We need drivers for this. It’s close and won’t take long. Sorry it’s in the middle of the afternoon, but that time worked for them. I’ll put a sheet out.
*The track meet is Friday, May 13th. You need to bring your children to the School of Mines track that morning about 8:30 to 8:45AM. The meet is usually done about 2PM so make arrangements to pick them up at that time if you are not going to be there. As soon as Mrs. Winjue gets their events to me I will make a list for each family so you know what events and what heats your child will be in. Each child is in 2 running events and 1 field event, with a few also running a relay. It is good to remember to send good running shoes every day now, as we do a lot of running as we prepare. They love it!
*Wednesday, May 25th – Our preschool and kindergarten graduation is scheduled for after chapel, which starts at 8:30. It is nothing fancy, but they do receive their diplomas and their Bibles to keep. They wear little white mortarboards. Afterwards we’ll have refreshments. I’ll take them back to the room after that. This is the last day of school and it is a half day, ending at 11:15AM. If anyone needs to leave after the graduation they can do so.
*June 6th through the 10th is Vacation Bible School. Be thinking of friends to ask along. Sign up sheets are available! We still need helpers, so let us know if you’d like to help that week!
We learn about Saul/Paul this week, how he became a Christian, and then spent the rest of his life sharing Jesus with others. We’ll learn about his missionary trips and that we have missionaries today all over the world. They’ll learn that they, too, are missionaries! This is the last week our offering goes to help the people of Japan. Our Bible verse this week is Mark 16:15 “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.”
The last book order is in the folder. I’ll send it out on Friday! Look for books they can read this summer! I’ll be sending home a summer calendar to keep them using their skills, but they still need to find things to read, read, and read!

God’s blessings on your week, Roxi
