Summer Helps For Kindergarten and First Graders (and Their Parents!)

Tips for Parents Taken From: LD Online

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.
Parents should remember that children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your children this summer:

*Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.

*Take your children to the library regularly. Get signed up for Rapid City Public Library’s Summer Program. Let your child have their own library card.

*Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say.

*Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.

*Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook/journal. Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together. A simple spiral notebook can become a precious keepsake if they write in it most days this summer. Encourage and remind of punctuation and simple conventions of print.

April 18th, 2011
Dear Parents,

Holy Week is here! As we have been making our Resurrection eggs the children have been learning about all the things that happened on that first Holy Week long ago, and why it is so important to us. They will bring these home Wednesday, along with a little booklet, so they can share the Good News with family over Easter. Jesus died and rose for each of us! Our verse will be Matthew 28:6 “He is not here; He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay.” We will continue to study the disciples and how God was with them as they shared the Good News! We have no school this Thursday, Friday, or Monday. Our church services at Zion for Holy Week are as follows:
*This Thursday, Maunday Thursday, church at 10AM and 7PM
*This Friday, Good Friday, services at 10AM and 7PM
*This Saturday - Easter Egg Hunt at Zion 9AM --Be sure to come early, as it starts on time and lasts about 3 minutes!! If you plan on attending they are asking you bring a dozen eggs per child with sealed candy inside the eggs and then tape them shut. If you are not able to make it but would like to bring in eggs or candy they would appreciate your donations, Thank you!
*Sunday Easter service-at 6AM, 8AM, and 10:45AM with breakfast from 7am to 10am.

Here are a few more details to a couple of our special activities coming up.
·   Our Reptile Gardens trip is Monday, May 2nd. We will leave at 1:00PM so that we can have the rest of the afternoon to enjoy it. This costs $5 for children and $7 for adults. Those who want a season pass can pay $8 for children and $11 for adults. I still would like to have 1 or 2 more drivers! If you are able, please talk with me or sign the driver’s list outside our door!
·   Friday, May 13th, will be the Track Meet at O’Harra Stadium on the School of Mine’s campus. This is a whole day activity. The children are brought to the School of Mines Track by 8:45AM and it usually all done by 2PM. We encourage parents taking time to join us if possible, as it is a fun day. I will have help taking care of those who don’t have a parent in attendance. Each child will be in two races and one field event. This year the boys run in the morning with field events in the afternoon and the girls do the field events in the morning and run after the boys, which means usually right about noon. They should bring a healthy lunch and drinks, but I think they will also have a concession stand. They should have layers of clothes for comfort, sunscreen and a hat. They’ll be spending time with Mrs. Winjue and me getting ready for this! So it is important to have running shoes on every day now rather than sandals or clogs. There are at least 4 other schools that join us for this so there are lots of people there that day!
·   Friday, May 20th, is our second End-of-the-Year Spring Dance! We’ll have a DJ and a Hawaiian theme, with lots of fun group dances to learn as a family! More on the time next week.

It is amazing how well they are spelling! This week we’ll do more with short vowel ‘e’. I sent home a puzzle game to play in your child’s homework bag. I’ll leave it in there for a couple weeks then they’ll be able to take it home to keep.Be sure to see their color poems out in the hall in our Poem binder, along with others they’ve written.
In math we are working with addition and subtraction, finding different ways to arrange and describe various sets. I sent home a story problem homework paper in the homework bag. Do this sometime this week and send it back whenever you get it finished. Send back the math binders Tuesday for your new game to play over our long break.

If your looking for a dinner out with the family, I was informed that the Colonial House on Mt. Rushmore street offers a discount on your meal on Monday nights. If you wear your school logo they will give you $2 off the ticket price.

God’s blessings on your week!
Natalie Graumann
