Summer Helps For Kindergarten and First Graders (and Their Parents!)

Tips for Parents Taken From: LD Online

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.
Parents should remember that children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your children this summer:

*Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.

*Take your children to the library regularly. Get signed up for Rapid City Public Library’s Summer Program. Let your child have their own library card.

*Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say.

*Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.

*Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook/journal. Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together. A simple spiral notebook can become a precious keepsake if they write in it most days this summer. Encourage and remind of punctuation and simple conventions of print.

April 18, 2011 Knowing Jesus, Growing in Faith, Serving God’s Children
Dear Parents,
Happy Easter, almost! Since this is Holy Week, there are many opportunities to worship. There will be no school on Thursday, Friday, and Monday. On Thursday there are services at 10AM and 7PM. Good Friday also has services at 10AM and 7PM. Saturday morning is the Easter Egg Hunt at 9AM. Don’t be late for this one!! Easter Sunday has services at 6AM, 8AM, and 10:45AM, with breakfast served from 7AM to 10. There will be no Sunday School.

The children figured out last week that there aren’t many weeks of Kindergarten left! Some were happy summer was on its way, and others were thoughtful about only a few weeks of kindergarten left. We’ll keep very busy using these last days to really cement what we have learned! Plan on doing the same this summer. I’ll have a few things to help you, like a daily calendar with one little thing to do each day to stay sharp.
Here again is a list of all the special activities coming up.

• Our Reptile Gardens trip is Monday, May 2nd. We will leave at 1:00PM so that we can have the rest of the afternoon to enjoy it. This costs $5 for children and $7 for adults. Those who want a season pass can pay $8 for children and $11 for adults. The driver’s list is outside our door! Thank you to all who can drive. This is a fun one! We’ll have a hunt to find specific things!

• Our circus will be performed on Friday, May 6th, at 2:30PM. We’ve begun acting out the different parts. The singing is coming along beautifully, now with the piano accompaniment. Hopefully you can come, but feel free to invite grandparents or others, too, especially if you can’t leave work.

• Friday, May 13th, will be the Track Meet at O’Harra Stadium on the School of Mine’s campus. This is a whole day activity. The children are brought to the School of Mines Track by 8:45AM and it’s usually all done by 2PM. We encourage parents taking time to join us if possible, as it is a fun day. I will have help taking care of those who don’t have a parent in attendance. Each child will be in two races and one field event. This year the boys run in the morning and the girls run after the boys, which means usually right about noon. They should bring a healthy lunch and drinks, but I think they will also have a concession stand. They should have layers of clothes for comfort, sunscreen and a hat. They’ll be spending time with Mrs. Winjue and me getting ready for this! So it is important to have running shoes on every day now rather than sandals or clogs. There are at least 5 other schools that join us for this so there are lots of people there that day!

• Friday, May 20th, is our second End-of-the-Year Spring Dance! We’ll have a DJ and a Hawaiian theme, with lots of fun group dances to learn as a family! More on the time next week.

• Our kindergarten graduation will take place along with the preschools on the last day of school, Wednesday, May 25th, at 8:30AM. The graduation will last until about 9:30, including cake afterwards. Those who want to take their children home after cake may, but I’ll keep the rest until 11:15 AM, when everyone lets out for the summer.

This week we’re working with all our short vowels. Be sure to see their color poems out in the hall in our Poem binder, along with others they’ve written.

We’ll study the disciples and how God was with them as they shared the Good News! No new Bible words this week, just a review. In math we are working with addition and subtraction, finding different ways to arrange and describe various sets. Use those bead boards for playing with adding and subtracting. Many were able to see patterns forming, (2 +1, 2+2, 2+3, 2+4)

God’s blessings,

Roxi Withee
