Summer Helps For Kindergarten and First Graders (and Their Parents!)

Tips for Parents Taken From: LD Online

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.
Parents should remember that children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your children this summer:

*Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.

*Take your children to the library regularly. Get signed up for Rapid City Public Library’s Summer Program. Let your child have their own library card.

*Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say.

*Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.

*Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook/journal. Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together. A simple spiral notebook can become a precious keepsake if they write in it most days this summer. Encourage and remind of punctuation and simple conventions of print.

March 28th, 2011

Dear Parents,
Report cards are in this folder. Enjoy them and let your children know how well they are using the talents God has blessed them with! Look for those little things to work on at home to make them more well rounded and give them confidence. Working on the hardest parts just a little bit most nights can really make a difference in confidence.

Below I’ve listed most of the important dates to remember between now and the last day of school: *Next Friday - No School for Teacher In-Service
*April 7th –Spring Picture day for Kindergarten
*April 8th & 9th -PTL consignment sale with clothes and toys for sale
*April 15-Spring Concert 7pm
*April 21st-25th – Easter Break/ No School
*Friday, May 6th- We will present a circus play for you in the afternoon about 2:30pm. It is short but cute.
*Friday, May 13th – All Day Track Meet at the School of Mines Track
*Wednesday, May 25th – Kindergarten and Preschool Graduation after Chapel at 8:30AM, school out at 11:15PM – last day of school.
--We’ll have another field trip coming up – to Reptile Gardens. Needless to say, our last quarter will be a very busy one!

As we work on our Resurrection eggs the children have been learning about all the things that happened on that first Holy Week long ago, and why it is so important to us. They will bring these home, along with a little booklet, so they can share the Good News with family over Easter. We’ve completed half of them already. We learn about Jesus on trial this week. Our verse will be Acts 16:31 “Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.” This is the last week for our offerings to help buy Bibles for the children of the Ukraine.
We are just reviewing the short vowels a, o, and i this week. Check their guided reading bags nightly, too. There will not always be a new book or sometimes there might be two to practice. Rereading is very important now so they can become more fluent. They should be able to remember what the book is about, telling you the plot and how it ends. Go over the tricky words, maybe covering up the pictures. We have even been doing that some to encourage using the other strategies they know for tricky words.
For math we leave geometry for a while and return to counting and addition and subtraction. Continue to try out the geometry tools on the website you have in the binder, and next week we’ll go back to our math binders with a new game. Another math game to play at night is to just get a small pile of coins and sort them, name them and how much money each is. Even try putting a couple of coins together and figuring how much money that is. Begin with a nickel, dime, or quarter and adding a penny or two.
During God’s World time we continue to work with character traits. Last week I decided to do the character trait about being different. We have had a lot of copying lately and it is definitely a confidence booster but I wanted to talk about how each of us is special in our own way. This week we will talk about being kind and cooperation. We will also begin learning about our Circus musical. It will keep us busy the last months of school. We do it with the other class. This week they’ll choose what they want to be.
Book buddies can be returned and exchanged on Thursday since there is no school on Friday. If you were able to color in a majority of your March Book-It calendar return it this Thursday for your last certificate. Remember that March is our last month, they don’t do it in April or May.
Mrs. Sayles would like everyone to know that we have an excellent series of Christian books for teaching all ages about sex education. If you would like to check them out just see Mrs. Sayles.
In gym Mrs. Winjue will have them practicing running and jumping skills for the upcoming track meet in May. It would be a good idea to have good running shoes on every day, as we will practice often. I’ll tell you more about the track meet soon.

God’s blessings on your week!
