Summer Helps For Kindergarten and First Graders (and Their Parents!)

Tips for Parents Taken From: LD Online

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.
Parents should remember that children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your children this summer:

*Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.

*Take your children to the library regularly. Get signed up for Rapid City Public Library’s Summer Program. Let your child have their own library card.

*Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say.

*Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.

*Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook/journal. Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together. A simple spiral notebook can become a precious keepsake if they write in it most days this summer. Encourage and remind of punctuation and simple conventions of print.

Note for February 22, 2011
Friday, February 18, 2011 :: 185 Views :: Kindergarten-1 ::

Feb. 22, 2011 Knowing Jesus, Growing in Faith, Serving God’s Children
Dear Parents,

February is almost over! I’m so sorry I had dates wrong on last week’s note. These are the correct ones! Easter isn’t until late April, so I’ll address that later!
*Wednesday, March 2nd, we will celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday. I’ve not planned everything yet, but we’ll have fun with many of his books that week. Dig your own Dr. Seuss books out because most are ready to read some of them by themselves now! On that day we also have Black Hills Raptors coming to share their animals with us.
*March 6 – 11th, is National Lutheran Schools Week. A list of activities will be coming soon! We have several special speakers coming to the building, too. The whole school will be singing on Sunday, March 6th, at the 10:45AM services to begin Lutheran School’s Week. We will have our field trip to the hospital that Wed, March 9th, at 1PM.

There will be no school on two Fridays in March – the 18th and the 25th, for Kindergarten screening. There is no school for just the Kindergarten on those two days because we use the rooms for screening next year’s students. There is no school on Monday, March 21st for Spring Break.

Our Bible lessons are about the woman who anointed Jesus’ feet with oil as thankfulness for being forgiven, and Mary and Martha. We’ll learn that God forgives us for Jesus’ sake. With the help of God we can show our thanks in what we say and do. Our Bible verse to learn is Psalm 107:1 “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” Soon it will be Lent and we will begin learning about Jesus’ time on the earth right before His death and resurrection. I have some special activities planned to help us learn about this time. Each child needs a dozen plastic Easter eggs, the size that fit into a regular egg carton. I believe we have new egg cartons this year, so we only need the plastic eggs. We’ll start using them March 7th. Each child will be making a special set of items to help them remember and tell others what Jesus did for us.

We’ll continue to work with short "a" words this week. Everyone is catching on to phonetically stretching out words to spell or read them. Keep them writing at home! We’re having fun two ways with these words. We have word family books we read and riddles to figure out. Then we list the family words (like cat, bat, hat, etc.) This week we’ll work with,-ap, -ack, and –ank families. We are also playing two spelling games called “Making Words” and “Covered Word.” In the first game each have little letter cards (5 at this time) that we spell 8 to 10 words with. The last “mystery” word uses all 5 letters! Some love the challenge of trying to figure out the mystery word! In the second game they read a sentence together that has one word covered up. They make guesses, and then we uncover the beginning or ending letters to give a clue as to what the word is. This helps them learn to look at the beginning and end of a word for help. They are very simple but lots of fun – they love solving problems!

I will only be gone this Tuesday. Thank you so much for allowing your children to sing for Mr. Stoltz’s funeral. What a wonderful way to learn about heaven, by singing about Jesus’ great love for us!

God’s blessings on your week,

Roxi (No new math game this week! Keep playing old ones!)
