Summer Helps For Kindergarten and First Graders (and Their Parents!)

Tips for Parents Taken From: LD Online

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.
Parents should remember that children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your children this summer:

*Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.

*Take your children to the library regularly. Get signed up for Rapid City Public Library’s Summer Program. Let your child have their own library card.

*Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say.

*Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.

*Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook/journal. Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together. A simple spiral notebook can become a precious keepsake if they write in it most days this summer. Encourage and remind of punctuation and simple conventions of print.

Note for Jan. 24, 2011
Saturday, January 22, 2011 :: 182 Views :: Kindergarten-1 ::

January 24, 2011 Knowing Jesus, Growing in Faith, Serving God’s Children
Dear Parents,

January is almost over! Here are a few of the upcoming February events! We have a busy month planned. We’ll have two parties; one for the 100th day of school and one for Valentine’s Day. We don’t need help on the 100th day, but our room mothers will help for the Valentine’s party.

*There will be only a half-day of school on Friday, February 18th, because of parent teacher conferences in the afternoon, from 1 to 4 PM. I do not need to meet with everyone this time, but will ask a few to visit. If you wish to visit please send the note back this week. Thank you! On Monday, February 21st, there is no school for President’s Day.

The 100th Day of School will be celebrated on February 7th. We’ll be doing many things related to the number 100. Have your child bring 100 of something to eat in a baggie. Anything little is great, such as candies, cereal, marshmallows, etc. Be creative! You don’t need to send it until next week; I just wanted you to know how excited they are about this! In math we’re now doing many counting and recording activities with quantities up to 20. The teen numbers are difficult to master, but keep working with them.

Our Bible lessons will be about Zacchaeus and Jesus and the children this week. These are two of my favorite Bible lessons as they remind us how forgiving and loving God is! Our Bible verse is Matthew 19:14 “Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Keep up the good work helping learn these at home. This is one we learn to sing!

We’re working with “Uu” and “Vv” this week. Let’s see what you can find beginning with those sounds!

We’ll make a tooth-brushing chart soon to use in February. It has a space to mark for each day, morning and evening, for the next four weeks. Return it at the end of the month for a prize from the treasure box! We’ll learn about caring for our teeth in February. Mrs. Matthes will come help us learn about caring for our teeth. We’re still having fun with water, enjoying sinking and floating things today. They are learning to make predictions and hypotheses before actually doing experiments.

If you want to send Valentines you can begin next week. We’re making bags to put them in later this week. On the back of this note you will find a sheet with all the children’s names on it. Have your child use the list to write their own Valentines. We’ll soon be making Valentines for our elderly friends, for nursing home people as part of a KSLT project, and for you! I guess this is a good time to work with the letter “v!”

Please send back any Student Treasure Book Orders by this Friday. We are finishing the illustrations now and they are doing a fine job. See the special note about Pennies for Patients. Let’s have fun bringing in any change. We’ll learn a lot as we count it all!

I don’t think I’ll send the weekly email anymore. I’ve been having some trouble with it. I also have trouble remembering to attach the note!! I will have the note on the website below as early as possible each weekend so you can read it before Monday if you want. Let me know if you do still want the email!

God’s blessings on your week,
Roxi
