Summer Helps For Kindergarten and First Graders (and Their Parents!)

Tips for Parents Taken From: LD Online

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.
Parents should remember that children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your children this summer:

*Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.

*Take your children to the library regularly. Get signed up for Rapid City Public Library’s Summer Program. Let your child have their own library card.

*Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say.

*Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.

*Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook/journal. Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together. A simple spiral notebook can become a precious keepsake if they write in it most days this summer. Encourage and remind of punctuation and simple conventions of print.

Monday Note for Nov. 29, 2010
Sunday, November 28, 2010 :: 214 Views :: Kindergarten-1 ::

Nov. 29, 2010 Knowing Jesus, Growing in Faith, Serving God’s Children
Dear Parents,

Welcome back! Our Preschool, Kindergarten service “Angel, Angel” is this Sunday afternoon, Dec. 5th, at 4PM. Come about 3:30 so we can get all the costumes on. Our class will meet in our classroom to get ready. Next Monday we will go to Echo Ridge to put on our Christmas service for them. We need drivers. We’ll leave at 1:45PM and will be back before 3PM. I’ll put a driver’s list outside our door. Thank you!

We will be working with all our letters and sounds up to “Mm” this week. Find something beginning with “m” to share tomorrow. We’re writing about Christmas things and reading stories about Christmas. We’re also making a Christmas Alphabet book that they can read to you. It reviews the alphabet and the real Christmas story, also!

We’ll begin our Bible lesson of Jesus’ birth up to the visit from the shepherds. We start with Zechariah and baby John. We’re learning right from Luke 2. Our verse to remember for this week is John 3:16 “For God so loved the world he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”

We’re really improving our oral speaking skills. This is as important as reading and writing. We pair up and discuss a topic, then go back to a big group and share what the partner told. That’s much harder than sharing their own thoughts. They also have to introduce their partner, another lost art in this day and age! Then the students ask questions the child must answer in complete sentences.

This Wednesday begins Zion’s Advent services. Services are at 10AM and 6:00 PM. Pastor Schwan has moved the evening service to 6PM so families can come to dinner at 5PM, stay for church and still get home by bedtime! The older children will go to the 10 AM service as chapel, but we will have our own in our room with the other kindergarten and the preschool. We will play our bells for this Wednesday mornings service, right at the beginning of the service. Advent is a time to prepare for Jesus’ coming. We’ll take time to make some Christmas crafts or art projects to help us enjoy Advent.

We’ll have a little Christmas party on Friday, the 17th, the last day before Christmas break. Our room moms may ask for some help providing treats. We’ll be doing a craft and playing holiday games, as well as eating!! I have Advent Christmas stickers we will use to count down to Jesus’ Birthday! This is my favorite month at school!

Get Book It calendars in for November this week. I put December’s calendar in the folder. Have fun! Since we’re back to a full week, please get library books and math binders back tomorrow!

Have a great week! God’s blessings,

Roxi
