Summer Helps For Kindergarten and First Graders (and Their Parents!)

Tips for Parents Taken From: LD Online

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.
Parents should remember that children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your children this summer:

*Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.

*Take your children to the library regularly. Get signed up for Rapid City Public Library’s Summer Program. Let your child have their own library card.

*Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say.

*Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.

*Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook/journal. Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together. A simple spiral notebook can become a precious keepsake if they write in it most days this summer. Encourage and remind of punctuation and simple conventions of print.

November 15th, 2010

Dear Parents,
Thank you all for coming to conferences last week! I really enjoyed speaking with each of you about your child. God has truly blessed each one of you with a superb child with special gifts! Just to let you know I have been putting pictures up on the website of things we’ve been doing in the classroom and some recess pictures too. Just go to the Zion website (www.zioncrusaders.org) and click on the photo gallery.

Our Bible lessons are about David this week. We learn that God has blessed us with the gift of music. We can use it to return praise and thanks to Him, especially thanking Him for His greatest gift, Jesus, our Savior! We’ll be learning to play bells this week as a way to praise Him, as well as working on our Christmas service songs. Our Bible verse is from James 5:13 “Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.” Our offering this month goes to Meals on Wheels.

We’re working with “Kk” this week. At home have fun encouraging the use of all letters. Have your child write little notes to you, label things with post its, or try some fun ways to use magnetic letters. Remember to have your child think up a simple sentence, then have them write it down using what they know – beginning with a capital, stretching out new words and writing quickly those “fast words” they can read so well, and ending with some kind of punctuation. Or you can still write the sentence, but talk about those things, then cut the sentence up and have them put it back together. Please bring something that has the letter Kk in it tomorrow.

This week we’ll begin our new unit on patterns in math. They are becoming very good at using math vocabulary; they’re able to state how they did something, and able to check their work, becoming more accurate as they do so. We’ll also begin talking about the continents, along with different types of land and water formations this week during God’s World.

At Zion we us the Love & Logic approach to discipline. There are videos and cds available to help with parenting strategies. They are located in the front narthex in the glass case. All you have to do is sign it out saying you have it and cross your name off when you return it.

Upcoming Events:
*This Saturday, November 20th there is a craft fair here from 8AM-2PM. There are all kinds of crafts and baked goods for sale. Come check it out!
*Grandparent’s Day is next Wednesday, Nov. 26th. Grandparents or special friends (Moms and dads, too!) are invited to come at 8:15AM to go with us to chapel, and then stay for a short preschool, Kindergarten presentation. Then we’ll head back to our room and grandparents can come, too. It may be a bit crowded, but we’ll do some school activities together. School will be dismissed at 11:15AM. There will be no lunch or daycare.
*Thursday and Friday the 26th and 27th we have no school for Thanksgiving.
*Don’t forget to mark Sunday, December 5th on your calendar. That is the date of our Christmas service, “Angel, Angel!” at 4PM. Please let me know if you will not be here, ASAP!, so we can reassign the part. I have sent home only a few children’s parts with line highlighted. Please practice this with them often so they are comfortable with it by the time they have to say it. The others are doing well already and won’t need the extra practice.

God’s blessings,
Natalie Graumann
