Summer Helps For Kindergarten and First Graders (and Their Parents!)

Tips for Parents Taken From: LD Online

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.
Parents should remember that children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your children this summer:

*Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.

*Take your children to the library regularly. Get signed up for Rapid City Public Library’s Summer Program. Let your child have their own library card.

*Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say.

*Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.

*Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook/journal. Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together. A simple spiral notebook can become a precious keepsake if they write in it most days this summer. Encourage and remind of punctuation and simple conventions of print.

Monday Note 11/8/10

November 8th, 2010
Dear Parents,
*This is a short week due to parent-teacher conferences. We dismiss on Thursday at 11:15AM, with conferences that afternoon and on Friday. You received your conference time in the folder last week. If that will not work please let me know right away and we’ll make different arrangements. I look forward to visiting with each of you! We also have our field trip to Lowe’s this week on Wednesday, November 10th. We’ll learn that tools help us complete a task! Thank you to all who can drive! Drivers please be here at 1pm so we can leave a little after 1pm. We should be back around 2:30pm.
*Reminder…This Sunday, the 14th, is when the kindergarteners are playing bells in the afternoon at 4pm. We will play “We Gather Together” on the bells at the 4PM installation of our new pastor. Please meet back in our rooms by 3:45 to be lined up and ready to play at 4pm. Thank you for the wonderful group able to play. We will really be able to lead worship
*Our Bible lessons are about Samuel this week. We will learn that God was with Samuel wherever he went, and He’s with us and blesses us wherever we are, too. Our Bible verse is from I Samuel 3:19 “The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up.” We’ll put our names into this verse, too! All month we will discuss our blessings and how we can thank the Lord for these many blessings.
*We continue to work with “Aa” through “Ii” this week and add “Jj.” We are always stretching out words now. At conferences I will share a fun, quick way to practice writing and reading with your child. Find something that begins with “j.” NO Show and Tell this week! We’ll be writing about things we are thankful to God for to put on our walls. Be sure to look at the cute turkeys in the hall!
*This week we’ll finish our unit on plants and animals in God’s World. We are discussing the different habitats living creatures live in. They will be bringing home their plant they planted a couple weeks ago to take care of. Next week we’ll begin talking about the continents, along with different types of land and water formations this week, as well as learning a little history of Thanksgiving time. I hope to have each child dictate about how to cook a turkey for the Journal contest, so watch the Thanksgiving Day paper and the Journal website to see if any of ours make it in! They can be so cute!.
*In math we will have fun comparing the length and amount of things. They’re learning to line up two sets to see which has more or less. Thanks to those who got the homework done with family names. That was fun! Keep those math binders one more week. I know it’s hard to get to those games, but the “What’s Next?” is an important game to play often. If they’re good at it, try the variations.
*Wednesday, Nov. 26th, is Grandparents Day and is a half day also, ending at 11:15 to give people time to travel. If you don’t have a grandparent available to come they can bring a special “friend”. We’ll go to chapel first, and then have a special program time in the multipurpose room for preschool and kindergarten. Then we will go to our classroom. Visitors can squeeze in with us to see some of the things we do in Kindergarten! Don’t worry if no Grandparents are available, we’ll have lots of visitors.
*Last week I sent home the November and December book orders. They are due this Wednesday, November 11th. If you would still like to place an order please do so this week! That way if you ordered any Thanksgiving books they’ll be here by then. Thank you!

Upcoming Dates:
*Thursday and Friday the 25th and 26th we have no school for Thanksgiving.
*Don’t forget to mark Sunday, December 5th on your calendar. That is the date of our Christmas service, “Angel! Angel!” at 4PM. Everyone wears a simple costume. We do need 4 more shepherds’ costumes. If anyone has a bathrobe that would work, please let me know, or the ability to sew a simple one. Thanks! A few children have a line to learn. I’ll send these home in the folder highlighted. Most will sing, do finger plays and play the bells for our service.

God’s blessings,
Natalie Graumann
