Summer Helps For Kindergarten and First Graders (and Their Parents!)

Tips for Parents Taken From: LD Online

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.
Parents should remember that children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your children this summer:

*Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.

*Take your children to the library regularly. Get signed up for Rapid City Public Library’s Summer Program. Let your child have their own library card.

*Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say.

*Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.

*Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook/journal. Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together. A simple spiral notebook can become a precious keepsake if they write in it most days this summer. Encourage and remind of punctuation and simple conventions of print.

November 8, 2010 Knowing Jesus, Growing in Faith, Serving God’s Children
Dear Parents,

Welcome to a short week. Remember, Thursday is over at 11:15AM for Parent Teacher Conferences and Friday is no school for the same reason. I’m looking forward to visiting with each of you!
*This Wednesday we have our field trip to Lowes, leaving about noon or shortly after. We’ll learn that tools help us complete a task! Thank you to all who can drive! Sorry it is right in the middle of our day! The other class has the hour right after us!
*This coming Sunday, the 14th, we will play “We Gather Together” on the bells at the 4PM installation of our new pastor. Thank you for the wonderful group able to play. We will really be able to lead worship!
* Wednesday, Nov. 24th, is Grandparents Day and is a half-day also, ending at 11:15 to give people time to travel. We’ll go to chapel first, and then have a special program time in the multipurpose room for preschool and kindergarten. Afterwards we will go to our classroom. Visitors can squeeze in with us to see some of the things we do in Kindergarten! Don’t worry if no grandparent is available. We’ll have lots of visitors!
*Thursday and Friday the 25th and 26th we have no school for Thanksgiving.
*Don’t forget to mark Sunday, December 5th on your calendar. That is the date of our Preschool/Kindergarten Christmas service, Angel, Angel!” at 4PM. Everyone wears a simple costume. We do need 4 more shepherds’ costumes. If anyone has a bathrobe that would work, please let me know, or the ability to sew a simple one. Thanks! A few children have a line to learn. I’ll send these home in the folder highlighted. Most will sing, do finger plays and play the bells for our service.
We continue to work with “Aa” through “Ii” this week and add “Jj.” We are always stretching out words now. Find something that begins with “j.” No show and tell this week. We’ll be writing about things we are thankful to God for to put on our walls. Be sure to look at the cute turkeys in the hall!
In math we will have fun comparing the length and amount of things. They’re learning to line up two sets to see which has more or less. Thanks to those who got the homework done with family names. That was fun! Keep those math binders one more week. I know it’s hard to get to those games, but the “What’s Next?” is an important game to play often. If they’re good at it, try the variations.
Our Bible lessons are about Samuel this week. We will learn that God was with Samuel wherever he went, and He’s with us and blesses us wherever we are, too. Our Bible verse is from I Samuel 3:19 “The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up.” We’ll put our names into this verse, too! All month we will discuss our blessings and how we can thank the Lord for these many blessings.
We will finish our animal studies with habitats, then begin learning the continents, along with different types of land and water formations this week, as well as learning a little history of Thanksgiving time. I hope to have each child dictate about how to cook a turkey for the Journal contest, so watch the Thanksgiving Day paper and the Journal website to see if any of ours make it in! They can be so cute!
Please try to get your book orders in this week. You can bring them in to conferences if you want to! Don’t be afraid to try the online ordering. It’s easy! You just need that code that is on the front of the paper copies.
God’s blessings,

Roxi Withee
