Summer Helps For Kindergarten and First Graders (and Their Parents!)

Tips for Parents Taken From: LD Online

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.
Parents should remember that children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your children this summer:

*Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.

*Take your children to the library regularly. Get signed up for Rapid City Public Library’s Summer Program. Let your child have their own library card.

*Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say.

*Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.

*Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook/journal. Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together. A simple spiral notebook can become a precious keepsake if they write in it most days this summer. Encourage and remind of punctuation and simple conventions of print.

Monday Note 10/25/10
Monday, October 25, 2010 :: 190 Views :: Kindergarten-2 ::

Dear Parents,
Can you believe our first quarter ends this Friday already? My the time has sure gone fast!
Our Bible lessons this week are about Martin Luther and how God used him to let people know about His Word. We’ll make a simple color book about his life, emphasizing how he found a Bible and discovered how much God really loved him, and that Jesus died and rose for him. We’ll learn how he translated the Bible and then found a way to make many Bibles for the people of his time. We’ll be sure to thank God for the Holy Bible that we have in our own homes, school, and hearts. This week’s Bible verse is Psalm 119:104 “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” We’ll learn it in the King James Version because of the well-known song that makes it so easy to learn.
We will be working with “Hh” this week. Remember that they should be able to say the name of a letter, its sound or sounds, and think of things that begin or end with that sound, as well as write both capitals and lowercase. Think of words that use our first eight letters and have them sound them out and write them. Suggestions are: dad, had, beg, bed, cab, fad, etc. A fun website that has many phonics activities is: www.starfall.com. There may not be a new book in the homework bag this week as I am assessing for report cards.
Friday is the last day for October’s Book It. Send the calendar back next week and I will send a prize home with your child. I will send the November calendar home in next weeks Monday folder. Just spend a few minutes most nights reading with your child. The little books they bring home to read to you are a great way to get started! Soon everyone will be bringing little books home!
In math we keep doing much counting, comparing, and recording our work. Most still need to count sets of things often, and compare sets of things – how many more spoons did I get out than forks? How many pennies, nickels, and dimes do you have in your pocket? Which set has more, and how many more?
If the children want to share their costume for Show and Tell this week, they can bring it to show us on their day. We will have Trunk or Treat Sunday, Oct. 31st, here at the church, from 5 to 7 PM. Come join many others for a fun evening of fellowship! Remember if you plan to attend it would be appreciated if you could bring a bag of candy for each child you are bringing. These can be left in the church office any time.
In God’s World we’ve progressed into habitats for animals. This week we will work a lot with sorting animals using the promethean board to put the animals in their correct habitat. We will also be making posters to put up on the wall. We also have a foreign exchange student coming this Friday to share about her culture.
Parent Teacher Conferences are in a couple weeks beginning on Thursday, Nov.11th. We have a half day of school that day, dismissing at 11:15AM. There will be no childcare after 11:15 either. There is no school on Friday for conferences. Report cards will be given out at conferences. I’ll share your child’s work with you and answer any questions, too. Our report cards reflect the State Standards for Kindergarten so you can see just what goals we are meeting! Conferences take about 15 minutes. I’m looking forward to meeting with you!
Thank you to those who have already returned their Art to Remember packets!! We still have a few out there. Remember it needs to be turned in by tomorrow Tuesday, October 26th! This packet includes ordering information, including a brochure, an order form and a preview magnet. The magnet is NOT FREE. You may choose to buy the magnet or it can be returned to the school with no obligation.
It is finally time to bring in those leaves you have been pressing in the phone books! Put them in a shoe box or something because they’ll be fragile and send them tomorrow or Wednesday. We’ll be using them to make magnets for ourselves and our elderly friends.
We have our fall Field Trip scheduled for Wednesday, November 10th. We are going to Lowe’s to make a project. I’m planning a unit on tools and how they help us complete tasks. I will need volunteer driver’s to get us there and back. I will put a driver’s sheet next to the door. Please sign up if you are able.
God’s blessings,
Natalie Graumann
