Summer Helps For Kindergarten and First Graders (and Their Parents!)

Tips for Parents Taken From: LD Online

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.
Parents should remember that children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your children this summer:

*Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.

*Take your children to the library regularly. Get signed up for Rapid City Public Library’s Summer Program. Let your child have their own library card.

*Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say.

*Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.

*Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook/journal. Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together. A simple spiral notebook can become a precious keepsake if they write in it most days this summer. Encourage and remind of punctuation and simple conventions of print.

Monday Note for October 25, 2010
Saturday, October 23, 2010 :: 204 Views :: Kindergarten-1 ::

Dear Parents, Knowing Jesus, Growing in Faith, Serving God’s Children

Our first quarter ends this Friday! We’re off to a fine start. Remember these important events and dates for the coming weeks.
*Get those Art to Remember red envelopes back by tomorrow, please.
*Sunday is the ”Trunk or Treat Event” from 5 to 7PM in the church parking lot. Come have fun together! The people decorating cars could use help having enough candy for a bunch of people! We’ll have cars with candy, games, a hayride wagon, and cocoa. I’m decorating one of the cars, so come see me!!
*Our first field trip will be on Wed., Nov. 10th, from 12:15 to 1:45. We are going to Lowe’s to make a project. I’m planning a unit on tools and how they help us complete tasks. I’ll put a driver’s sheet next to the door.
*Parent Teacher Conferences are on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 11th. We have a half-day of school that day, dismissing at 11:15AM. There will be no childcare after 11:15 either. There is no school or childcare on Friday for conferences. Report cards will be given out at conferences. I’ll share your child’s work with you and answer any questions, too. Conferences take about 15 minutes. I’m looking forward to meeting with you! Our report cards reflect the State Standards for Kindergarten so you can see just what goals we are meeting! Your conference times will come home as soon as Miss Nora gets them all scheduled!
*Bring your leaves back this week! Slide them out of the phone books into a small box, as they will be fragile. We’re planning to make our bookmarks later in the week, probably on Thursday!
*Wednesday, Nov. 24th, will be Grandparent’s Day at Zion. This is a half-day of school. We will begin with chapel and everyone is invited. After chapel the Preschool and Kdg. classes will have a short musical presentation for the visitors right in the multipurpose room. Then we’ll go to our classroom and share some of our daily activities with those who want to visit. We’ll dismiss at 11:15. If your child doesn’t have a grandparent available, feel free to invite a special friend instead. They don’t really need to have anyone there, but I know they like to!! This is a half-day for the whole school, so there will be no aftercare or Kdg. enrichment. *Thursday and Friday, Nov. 25th and 26th, no school for Thanksgiving.
We will be working with “Hh” this week. Remember that they should be able to say the name of a letter, its sound or sounds, and think of things that begin or end with that sound, as well as write both capitals and lowercase. Think of words that use our first eight letters and have them sound them out and write them. A fun website that has many phonics activities is: www.starfall.com. This is also a great time to begin writing one little sentence as nightly homework. I’ll put a sheet in their homework bag with suggestions as to how to do this. It only needs to take a few minutes but garners great rewards! Look for that paper this week instead of little books. We’ll get back to those next week. I’m doing small group assessments for report cards!
Our Bible lessons this week are about Martin Luther and how God used him to let people know about His Word. We’ll make a simple color book about his life, emphasizing how he found a Bible and discovered how much God really loved him, and that Jesus died and rose for him. We’ll learn how he translated the Bible and then found a way to make many Bibles for the people of his time. We’ll be sure to thank God for the Holy Bible that we have in our own homes, school, and hearts. This week’s Bible verse is Psalm 119:104 “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” We’ll learn it in the King James Version because of the well-known song that makes it so easy to learn. This is the only lesson that is not a direct Bible story, but we’ll use our Bibles everyday as we see why we need His Book so badly!
In math we keep doing much counting, comparing, and recording our work. Most still need to count sets of things often, and compare sets of things – how many more spoons did I get out than forks? How many pennies, nickels, and dimes do you have in your pocket? Which set has more, and how many more?
Friday is the last day for October’s Book It. Send the calendar back next week and I will send home the pizza certificate! A sheet for November will be in the folder. Reading together is so important!!
God’s blessings, Roxi Withee
