Tips for Parents Taken From: LD Online

Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but children who continue to read actually gain skills. Efforts should be made during the summer to help children sustain reading skills, practice reading and read for enjoyment.
Parents should remember that children need free time in the summer to relax and enjoy the pleasures of childhood. So summer reading should be fun. Following are a few tips to make reading enjoyable for your children this summer:
*Read aloud together with your child every day. Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park. Also, let your children read to you. For younger children, point out the relationship between words and sounds.

*Take your children to the library regularly. Get signed up for Rapid City Public Library’s Summer Program. Let your child have their own library card.

*Subscribe, in your child's name, to magazines like Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World. Encourage older children to read the newspaper and current events magazines, to keep up the reading habit over the summer and develop vocabulary. Ask them what they think about what they've read, and listen to what they say.

*Ease disappointment over summer separation from a favorite school friend by encouraging them to become pen pals. Present both children with postcards or envelopes that are already addressed and stamped. If both children have access to the Internet, email is another option.

*Encourage children to keep a summer scrapbook/journal. Tape in souvenirs of your family's summer activities picture postcards, ticket stubs, photos. Have your children write the captions and read them aloud as you look at the book together. A simple spiral notebook can become a precious keepsake if they write in it most days this summer. Encourage and remind of punctuation and simple conventions of print.

Monday Note 4/26/11
Tuesday, April 26, 2011 :: 142 Views :: Kindergarten-2 ::

April 26th, 2011

Dear Parents,
These last weeks of school are always so busy! Our weeks are flying by! It really hit me this weekend that there aren’t many weeks of Kindergarten left! We’ll keep very busy using these last days to really cement what we have learned! I will be gone for that Cognitive Learning Conference again this Thursday and Friday. Mrs. Al-Haj will be here again. She did a fantastic job with the students last time and they are excited to have her back!

*Next Monday, May 2nd, is our trip to Reptile Gardens at 1:00PM. Thank you to those who volunteered to drive! You will only have two or three in your group which is easier while you go hunting for specific things. This is our only trip with a cost -$5 for students and $8 for adults. If you’d like the season passes they are $7 for students and $11 for adults. If you could send that in this week in an envelope with your name on it, that would be helpful for me to have it all ready to go. If you already have a season pass just send that in and I’ll return it that afternoon. If you want your child in a car/booster seat for the ride please leave their personal one from your vehicle out in the hall to put in our volunteer driver’s vehicle.
*Next Friday, May 6th – Our circus play will be performed at 2:30PM in the multipurpose room. Bring your cameras or camcorders! It’s very short, but so cute! We’re working on the acting parts now that they know the music so well, especially adding little details!  We have most of the costumes. If tight rope walkers have a pink leotard or dance outfit with white tights, that would be perfect. The other costumes are taken care of.
*We will be presenting the circus to the Westhills Village assisted living facility on Tuesday, May 10th at 1pm. We’ll leave 15 minutes early. I know we’ve had a lot of driving lately but I will need drivers for this. It’s close and won’t take long. Sorry it’s in the middle of the afternoon, but that time is what worked for them. There is a sign-up sheet by the door.
*The track meet is Friday, May 13thYou need to bring your children to the School of Mines track that morning about 8:30 to 8:45AM. The meet is usually done about 2PM so make arrangements to pick them up at that time if you are not going to be there. As soon as Mrs. Winjue gets their events to me I will make a list for each family so you know what events and what heats your child will be in. Each child is in 2 running events and 1 field event, with a few also running a relay. It is good to remember to send good running shoes as we do a lot of running as we prepare. They love it!
*Wednesday, May 25th – Our preschool and kindergarten graduation is scheduled for after chapel, which is at 8:30. It is nothing fancy, but they do receive their diplomas and their Bibles to keep. They wear little white mortarboards. Afterwards we’ll have refreshments. I’ll take them back to the room after that. This is the last day of school and it is a half day, ending at 11:15AM. If anyone needs to leave after the graduation they can do so.
We learn about Saul/Paul this week, how he became a Christian, and then spent the rest of his life sharing Jesus with others. We’ll learn about his missionary trips and that we have missionaries today all over the world. They’ll learn that they, too, are missionaries! Our Bible verse this week is Mark 16:15 “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation.”
In Math we are also finishing up our Addition/Subtraction unit. We will learn a couple more games to help with seeing combinations of numbers. We are learning that 6 can be made with 3 and 3, 2 and 4, 1 and 5, etc.  We are really working those story problems using manipulatives to see what we are hearing. We are also working with symbolic addition and subtraction so that they know how to write it down.  No new game in the math binder this week, just keep practicing working on those games that they need the extra help with.
The last book order is in the folder. I’ll send it out on Friday to get it back in time! They have been slow shipping them so I want to get them back before the end of the year. Look for books they can read this summer!

God’s blessings on your week!
